Columbus-Belmont State Park Columbus-Belmont State Park  The 2005 and 2006 MSU summer field schools in archaeology conducted survey and testing in Columbus-Belmont State Park, Hickman County, Kentucky, site of a major Civil War fortification built by the Confederates and later occupied by Union troops.  The students surveyed two areas of the site with metal detectors, flagging “hits” and excavating shovel test pits at every tenth flag.  In the area behind Arrowhead Point, the northeastern salient of the embankments, a shovel test pit penetrated a deep feature, which was exposed and excavated.  The report to the Office of State Archaeology for 2005 and field data from 2005 and 2006 have been digitized and are posted here.  27 14 months ago
Edward Moulton Barrett house, Falmouth, Jamaica Edward Moulton Barrett house, Falmouth, Jamaica  In conjunction with Falmouth Heritage Renewal, Inc. and the Center for Cooperative Studies Abroad, students from a number of universities including MSU conducted archaeological testing in Falmouth, Jamaica, in 2006 and 2008.  Falmouth is on the north coast of Jamaica in Trelawney Parish, and was a busy port from the late eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century.  The project is intended to explore the socioeconomic diversity within the community.  The study began with the houselot originally belonging to Edward Moulton Barrett, because of potential plans to develop the property in the foreseeable future.  Field records, reports to the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, and a couple of conference presentations are posted.  39 2 months ago
Fords Bay, Land Between the Lakes Fords Bay, Land Between the Lakes  The 2007 MSU summer field school in archaeology began a cooperative program with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service’s Land Between the Lakes towards research on and management of the LBL’s archaeological heritage. The project tested a small mound in Trigg County, Kentucky, to establish its chronology and function.  The mound is most likely to be a TVA bulldozer pile that incorporated material from a surrounding Archaic site.  Field records and a preliminary report are posted.  9 14 months ago
Hematite, Land Between the Lakes Hematite, Land Between the Lakes  The community of Hematite coalesced around iron production at Center Furnace, Trigg County, Kentucky, in the mid-nineteenth century.  Now in the U.S.D.A. Forest Service’s Land Between the Lakes, the site is interpreted for the public.  Informant’s recollections placed an African-American settlement in the lowlands on the north part of the town.  The 2008 MSU field school in archaeology began a survey in order to locate the African American settlement.  Preliminary survey with a fluxgate gradiometer indicated a number of possible targets, and excavation exposed a large trash-filled feature at one of the targets.  Field records and a preliminary report are posted.  10 14 months ago
